Swimming

We swim every day (weather permitting). We take an Ann Arbor Public Schools bus to Buhr Pool. Swimming is from 1:50pm to 3:50pm.

Water Safety
Each child has a clothes pin labeled with his/her name. After arriving at the pool, children choose a buddy and tell the counselors who their buddy is and what part of the pool they plan on playing in. Counselors use the labeled clothespins to keep track of who each child is buddies with and which part of the pool they plan to swim.

swim buddiesWhile in the water each swimmer must be with or in close proximity to his/her swim buddy. Every 20 minutes there is a quick "buddy check" when swimmers will stop play, swim to the edge of the pool with their buddy, and wait while the counselors do a head count. The on deck counselor is responsible for coordinating the buddy checks and reconciling the head counts with the labeled clothespins and attendance. Halfway through our swim time the pool announces an adult swim when all children and counselors are to get out of the water. During this time, counselors do another head count and the children get a quick snack and more sunscreen.

Children are required to wear colored T-shirts, provided by CDC, while swimming. This helps us to quickly see which children in the pool are ours.

What to bring
Campers should bring a swim suit and labeled towel daily. Wet towels, swim suits, and other wet clothing should be taken home every night.

Sun protection at the pool
Before the children leave for the pool, they all get sun screen and a CDC t-shirt. After swimming for about 1 hour all the children get out of the pool and have sun screen re-applied to their faces.
